Traits of Compassionate Kids

The only thing that can overcome a world where bullying, hatred, and just plain meanness are commonplace is COMPASSION. Encourage your kids to put themselves in others’ shoes before they criticize. And, if they have nothing good to say, say nothing at all. Always look for the good and give praise. This is HARD sometimes. It’s a lot easier to find fault. No one is perfect. Stop & think before you speak.

Compassion starts by noticing when others are sad, hurt, or not feeling well. But it’s more than this. It also requires you to stop whatever you’re doing and get involved.

From Latin, this word literally means to “suffer with”. A person with compassion will::

  • Notice when others are hurting.

  • Stop to help.

  • Take time to listen.

  • Do what they can.

  • Is kind, regardless of differences.

Are you compassionate? Take this quiz to find out.

  1. What does it mean to be a “good neighbor” when you see someone in need?

  2. When have you been sick or injured? How did others help you during your time of need?

  3. Showing compassion means you:

    1. listen carefully.

    2. give wisely.

    3. do what you can to help.

    4. all of the above.

  4. Compassion means giving people everything they ask for: TRUE? or FALSE?

  5. Sometimes compassion means showing “tough love.” What do you think this means? Can you think of an example?

Activities!

Zebras stay together and protect each other from mighty lions who would like to eat one or more of them. Their stripes help confuse the lions, too, when they stick together.
