The Gift of Mud
April is the month that tests our patience.
Shoes sink. Paths disappear. Fields smell heavy and damp. The ground gives way where it once felt firm, and everything seems messier than it should be by now.
It can feel as though spring is taking too long.
But this is the work.
Mud is soil holding water.
After winter, the ground is packed tight. Frozen. Locked. Rain loosens it. Snowmelt seeps in. Water fills the spaces between particles of sand, silt, and clay, softening what has been held fast for months.
The earth becomes pliable again.
Roots can move.
Seeds can settle.
Life can begin its quiet climb upward.
What looks like inconvenience is actually preparation.
Farmers wait for fields to dry—not because mud is useless, but because it has already done its job. Gardeners test soil in their hands, feeling for the moment when it is ready to be worked. Worms, insects, and tiny organisms stir below the surface, breaking down what came before and turning it into nourishment.
Nothing grows without this stage.
Mud reminds us that growth is rarely clean.
It comes from decay and patience, from breaking down and rebuilding. It asks us to slow our steps and accept that some seasons are meant for softening, not showing.
Spring does not arrive polished.
It arrives ready.
