Childhood Memories are Made of These
Meet Lura K. Houk
Do you remember when you were young and your grandmother or grandfather (or mom or dad) would set you on their lap and read you a story? Sometimes, it would be a true story they would tell about themselves, too. Precious!
Today, I’m interviewing Lura K. Houk, affectionately known as Katy Houk, and professionally known as L.K. Houk, author of the Down Home on the Farm series of children’s books. Katy has published three (almost four) of the seven books she has written for children from 5+ to enjoy. Each book has a moral lesson, but is not preachy. Stories are told from the point of view of the farm turkey, Tom T. who brings wisdom to the farmyard critters.
The first book in the series is Tom T.’s Tale in which the theme of how one can overcome depression and help oneself by serving others. It seems ironic, but it’s true. Sometimes we can be in our own head too much. Just by helping other’s through difficulties, we end up helping ourselves as well.
Her books are available on Amazon. To learn more about Katy and her work, visit her website — LKHouk.com. Each book is 8 1/4” x 10 1/4”, hardcover, printed in full color with gorgeous hand-painted illustrations, and did I mention they’re bilingual? Each page of text has English on top, a decorative row of turkeys, then Spanish on the bottom. What a great way to learn another language! Perfect for any family with young children, it will be a wonderful asset in a library or classroom as well.
Comment if you have suggestions for next month’s review. I need to hear what you like to read.
Spring is coming — and I, for one, can’t wait! See you in March.
